Introduction

In today's digital age, social media has become an essential tool for communication and information dissemination. Among various social media platforms, Twitter has emerged as a popular platform for sharing information, news, and updates. The Twitter account @anak_usu has become one of the important sources of information for students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of the University of North Sumatra (USU). This study aims to investigate the utilization of the Twitter account @anak_usu as a means of information about education, events, campus activities, and university development among FISIP students.

Background

The use of social media in higher education has gained significant attention in recent years. Social media platforms have become an essential tool for students to access information, connect with peers, and engage with academic communities. Twitter, in particular, has become a popular platform for sharing information, news, and updates. The Twitter account @anak_usu has been created to provide information about various aspects of campus life, including education, events, and university development. This study aims to investigate the utilization of the Twitter account @anak_usu as a means of information among FISIP students.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative descriptive method to investigate the utilization of the Twitter account @anak_usu as a means of information among FISIP students. The population consisted of all USU FISIP students in the 2010 and 2011 academic years, which amounted to 1,345 people. The sample size was determined using the Taroyamane formula, which produced 93 respondents from the two generations. The sampling technique applied was proportional nonprobability sampling, purposive sampling, and accidental sampling. Data was collected through questionnaires, and data analysis was carried out using a single table.

Theories Supporting the Study

Several theories support this study, including the theory of stimulus-organism-response (SOR), communication theory, mass communication theory, securities theory, and the internet. These theories provide a framework to understand the interaction between students and information presented through Twitter accounts. The SOR theory, for instance, suggests that the stimulus (information) presented through Twitter accounts can elicit a response (engagement) from students. Communication theory, on the other hand, highlights the importance of communication in building relationships and fostering engagement among students.

Results

The results of this study showed that 65.59% of students used the Twitter account @anak_usu as a means of information. This indicates that the Twitter account has been effective in conveying relevant and up-to-date information about various aspects of campus life, both in terms of education and activities. The results also showed that students tend to rely on social media as a source of primary information because it is fast and easily accessible.

Discussion

The utilization of social media, especially Twitter, shows a trend that continues to develop among students. Active involvement in utilizing this platform reflects changes in communication behavior in the digital age.
