Styrofoam-Zeolite Natural Fiber Membrane: Environmentally Friendly Solutions for Sea Water Filtration

Introduction

The increasing demand for clean water has led to the development of innovative technologies for water filtration. One such technology is the use of fiber membranes, which have shown great potential in removing contaminants from water. In this study, we aim to develop a Styrofoam-DMF-based fiber membrane with the addition of Pahae natural zeolite from North Sumatra, Indonesia. This natural fiber membrane is expected to provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for sea water filtration.

Background

Styrofoam, a type of plastic, has been widely used in various applications due to its lightweight and insulating properties. However, its non-biodegradable nature has raised concerns about its environmental impact. In recent years, researchers have explored the use of Styrofoam as a raw material for the production of fiber membranes. The addition of zeolite, a natural adsorbent, is expected to enhance the filtration capabilities of the fiber membrane.

Methodology

In this study, we used the electrospinning method to synthesize five different membrane samples with varying percentages of Pahae natural zeolite (5 WT%, 10 WT%, 15 WT%, 20 WT%, and 30 WT%) added to Styrofoam-DMF. The resulting fiber membranes were then characterized using various techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the addition of zeolite affected the fiber membrane structure. The intensity of the Styrofoam-DMF functional group decreased with an increase in the percentage of zeolite. Additionally, the diameter of the fiber increased significantly, with the largest diameter recorded on the fiber styrofoam-DMF+zeolite membrane 30 WT%, namely 2708.43 ± 248 Nm, while the diameter of Fiber Styrofoam-DMF was only 645.55 ± 140 Nm.

Discussion

The ability of the fiber membrane filtration produced was tested through a measurement of a decrease in the conductivity of sea water after the filtration process. Styrofoam-DMF+Zeolite 30 WT% fiber membrane shows the most significant results with a decrease in sea water electricity conductivity reaching 86.30%. Conversely, the Fiber Styrofoam-DMF membrane can only reduce the conductivity of sea water electricity by 42.47%.

The results of this study indicate that the addition of the Pahae natural zeolite can improve the quality of fiber fiber filtration based on Styrofoam-DMF. This is caused by the nature of zeolite as a natural adsorbent that is able to absorb a variety of contaminants in sea water, such as salt and heavy metals. Thus, the fiber membrane produced has great potential to be applied as an environmentally friendly and low-cost sea water filter.

Advantages of Using Zeolite Natural Pahae

The use of zeolite natural Pahae in the development of this fiber membrane has several advantages. First, the zeolite of the Pahae Nature is an abundant natural resource in Indonesia, so it is easily obtained and is relatively cheap. Second, the electrospinning process used in the membrane synthesis is relatively easy and can be done mass. Third, the fiber membrane produced has better properties compared to conventional filter membranes, such as the ability of filtration that is higher and more environmentally friendly.

Conclusion

The development of Styrofoam-DMF-based fiber membranes with the addition of the Pahae natural zeolite is the right step to answer the problem of clean water crisis in Indonesia, especially in coastal areas. This technology offers an environmentally friendly and economical solution to get clean water from the sea, which can benefit the community and preserve the environment.

Future studies can focus on scaling up the production of the fiber membrane and testing its performance in real-world applications. Additionally, the use of other natural zeolites or adsorbents can be explored to further improve the filtration capabilities of the fiber membrane.
