Introduction

The intertidal zone of Sialang Buah Beach, located in Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra Province, is a unique and dynamic ecosystem that supports a diverse range of marine life. The area is characterized by a large intertidal zone, which is the area between the highest and lowest tides. This zone is home to a variety of community activities, including fishing, tourism, and coastal development. Despite its importance, the intertidal zone of Sialang Buah Beach is facing numerous threats, including pollution, overfishing, and coastal erosion. Therefore, it is essential to conduct a study on the diversity of Bivalvia in this area to understand the structure of the Bivalvia community and its relationship with physics-chemical conditions.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Sialang Buah Village in March to April 2018 using the Purposive Sampling method at three stations. Bivalvia sampling was carried out at six points at each station. The results showed that there were six species of Bivalvia that were successfully identified, namely Meetrix meetrix, retrix Lusoria, Anadara Antiquata, Anadara Governor, Glauconome rugosa, and Perna viridis. The existence of Bivalvia shows density ranging from 21.00 to 59.50 individuals per square meter. In terms of diversity, the value of diversity obtained ranges from 1.15 to 1.35, which is included in the medium category. Bivalvia uniformity ranges from 0.71 to 0.75, while the dominance level is in the range of 0.24 to 0.44.

Results

The analysis of the main components (principal component analysis) shows that there is a positive correlation between bivalvia diversity and some environmental parameters, such as nitrates, phosphate, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and organic carbon. However, on the contrary, brightness, temperature, salinity, depth, and current indicates a negative relationship. The results of the study are presented in the following table:
