Introduction

The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials has led to the exploration of alternative sources for producing high-value materials. One such material is graphene, a highly conductive and versatile nanomaterial that has numerous applications in energy, electronics, and composite materials. However, the production of graphene is often associated with high costs and environmental impacts. In this study, we investigate the potential of coconut shell (Cocos Nucifera L.) as a raw material for producing graphene nano sheets (GNS) through pyrolysis.

Coconut Shell as a Raw Material

Coconut shell is a widely available agricultural waste that contains 33.61% cellulose and 19.27% hemicellulose, making it a rich source of carbon. The high carbon content of coconut shell makes it an attractive alternative to traditional sources of graphene, such as graphite and petroleum-based materials. Moreover, the use of coconut shell as a raw material can help reduce waste and promote sustainable development.

Research Methodology

This study was conducted through laboratory experiments, where coconut shell was subjected to pyrolysis at varying temperatures and times to produce GNS. The GNS products were then characterized using several techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), and Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR). The XRD data obtained showed the presence of a weak and width peak at C (002) with an angle of 2θ = 24.7 °, indicating the successful production of grapha.

Results and Discussion

The SEM-EDX analysis revealed that the GNS produced had a regular hexagonal morphology, with a very dense and aromatic structure. The FTIR data showed the presence of a CSP2 structure, which is characteristic of graphene. The EDX analysis revealed that the GNS was dominated by carbon atoms (C) between 80-84% and oxygen (O) between 12-19%. The optimum pyrolysis condition obtained in the GNS production process was at 400 ° C with a 4-hour pyrolysis time for the first and 1 hour for the second stage, producing a carbon composition that reached 87.3%.

The highest yield obtained from this study was 21.5% (W/W), indicating that coconut shells have great potential as a raw material for large-scale GNS production. These results demonstrate that organic waste such as coconut shells not only has economic value but can also be processed into valuable materials with various applications.

Crystallinity and Morphological Analysis

The crystallinity of the GNS produced was evaluated using XRD analysis, which showed a weak and width peak at C (002) with an angle of 2θ = 24.7 °. This indicates that the GNS produced had a high degree of crystallinity, which is essential for its electrical and mechanical properties. The morphology of the GNS was evaluated using SEM-EDX analysis, which revealed a regular hexagonal structure with a very dense and aromatic structure.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study demonstrates that coconut shell can be used as an alternative source for producing GNS with good characteristics. The optimum pyrolysis conditions obtained in this study can be used to produce GNS efficiently with adequate yield. This study provides new insights on the use of agricultural waste and contributes to the development of environmentally friendly materials based on renewable resources. With further studies, this potential can be developed to produce sustainable and economical products.

This study opens up new avenues for the use of coconut shell as a raw material for producing GNS. Future studies can focus on optimizing the pyrolysis conditions to produce GNS with higher yield and quality.
