Introduction

In the world of animal husbandry, especially for broiler chickens, the choice of physical form of rations can significantly affect feed efficiency. This research focuses on the analysis of various forms of rations given to broiler chickens, ranging from starter rations to finisher, with the aim of measuring the business value of the choice. The analyzed rations consist of mash, fine crumble, crumble, coarse crumble, and pellets applied to chickens aged 0 to 35 days.

Background and Significance

The selection of the physical form of rations not only affects feeding, but also affects the growth and health of chickens. Different forms of feed can provide better accessibility to chickens to get the nutrients needed according to their growth phase. For example, mash is a common form of feed that is easy to digest, but it may not provide the necessary nutrients for rapid growth. On the other hand, pellets are a more concentrated form of feed that can provide the necessary nutrients for rapid growth, but they may be more difficult for chickens to digest.

Methodology

The study took place at the Animal Biology Laboratory, Department of Animal Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra in October to November 2011 using the survey method. The test scenario involved 11 different treatments over the rations given in various phases of chicken growth, as follows:

P0: Mash (0-10 days), Crumble (11-21 days), and Pellet (22-35 days)
P1: Mash (0-21 days) and Coarse Crumble (22-35 days)
P2: Mash (0-21 days) and Pellet (22-35 days)
P3: Mash (0-10 days), fine crumble (11-21 days), and coarse crumble (22-35 days)
P4: mash (0-10 days), fine crumble (11-21 days), and pellet (22-35 days)
P5: Mash (0-7 days), fine crumble (8-14 days), crumble (15-21 days), and Coarse Crumble (22-35 days)
P6: Mash (0-7 days), fine crumble (8-14 days), crumble (15-21 days), and pellets (22-35 days)
P7: FINE CRUMBLE (0-21 days) and COARSE CRUMBLE (22-35 days)
P8: Fine Crumble (0-21 days) and Pellet (22-35 days)
P9: Crumble (0-21 days) and Coarse Crumble (22-35 days)
P10: Crumble (0-21 days) and Pellet (22-35 days)

Results and Discussion

From the results of the study, P8 treatment shows the best results with the highest benefits. This result was reflected in the total production cost of Rp. 15,571.84, the income over feed cost (iOFC) of Rp. 15,571.84, the ratio of benefits (R/C ratio) 1.33, and the breakdown point (BEP) for the production price of Rp 11,759.09 per kg and the breakdown point For production volume of 1.66.

The results showed P8 as the best choice showing the importance of innovation in ration formulations. Feed in the form of fine crumble and pellets in the last phase provides greater benefits compared to other forms, possibly due to positive effects on higher feed consumption and better level of feed conversion.

Conclusion

For farmers who want to increase the profitability of their broiler chicken business, it is necessary to consider the selection of the right physical form of feed and in accordance with the chicken growth phase. Through a comprehensive analysis like this, farmers can make more informative and strategic decisions to improve the efficiency of their business.

In the context of developing the livestock industry, it is important to continue to conduct further research on the impact of the physical form of feed on chicken performance, as well as adopting new technology that can support more sustainable and profitable livestock practices.

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the limited number of treatments. Future research should aim to increase the sample size and include more treatments to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of physical form of feed on chicken performance.
