The Effect of Giving Arbuscula Micoriza Fungi (FMA) to the Media with Different pHs on the Growth of Mindi Seedling (Melia Azedarach)

Introduction

Arbuscula micorizal fungi (FMA) is a biological agent that has the ability to help post-mining land rehabilitation programs and improve critical land. In this study, we examined the effect of the provision of FMA on the growth of Mindi seedlings (Melia Azedarach) at various levels of soil pH. Mindi, which is a tree-ending plant from the Meliaceae family, grows well in low to high areas at an altitude of 0-1200 meters above sea level. This plant can survive at a minimum temperature of -5 ° C and a maximum of 39 ° C, with an average annual rainfall between 600-2000 mm.

The Importance of Arbuscula Mycorrhizal Fungi in Plant Growth

Arbuscula mycorrhizal fungi play an important role in increasing the absorption of plant nutrients such as phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and other minerals. In addition, FMA can support the growth of host and extend root life, which is very important for the survival of plants in less supportive environmental conditions, such as lack of water and high soil temperatures. However, the soil pH also plays an important role in this process. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of FMA on the growth of Mindi seedlings at various pH levels.

Research Methodology

This study uses a factorial experimental design in a Complete Randomized Design (RAL) which involves two factors: Mykorriza and PH doses are different, with repetition five times. The Mykorriza factor consists of without mykorriza and 20 grams of mykorriza per plant, while the pH factor includes pH 4.5, pH 4.8, pH 5, and pH 5.4. The maintenance of Mindi's seedlings was carried out in the Glasshouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, and laboratory testing was carried out at the Land Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. This research was conducted from August to December 2021.

The Effect of FMA on the Growth of Mindi Seedlings at Various pH Levels

The results showed the interaction between the provision of mycorrhizal fungi and pH variations on the growth of mindi seedlings, which can be seen from the plant height parameter, plant diameter, and the dry weight of the plant. The seedlings that get FMA treatment show better growth than those who do not get this treatment, especially at pH which is more suitable for Mindi's growth.

The Interaction Between Mykorriza and pH on Plant Growth

From this analysis, it can be concluded that the combination of administration of FMA and the right soil pH can significantly increase the growth of Mindi seedling. This research is important in the context of land rehabilitation and can be a reference for more sustainable agricultural practices.

Conclusion

The provision of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in Mindi seedlings in the media with different pHs has a positive impact on plant growth. The interaction between Mykorriza and pH is proven to affect plant height, diameter, and dry weight of seedlings. This study not only provides insight into the importance of mycorrhizae in plant growth, but also emphasizes the need to consider pH factors in sustainable land rehabilitation efforts.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, we recommend that the use of FMA in land rehabilitation programs can be a effective way to improve plant growth. Additionally, the consideration of pH factors in land rehabilitation efforts is crucial to ensure the success of the program.

This study has some limitations, including the use of a small sample size and the limited number of pH levels tested. Future studies should aim to increase the sample size and test a wider range of pH levels to confirm the findings of this study.
