Introduction

Spirituality is a vital aspect of human life, encompassing a person's beliefs and values in relation to the Creator, fellow humans, self, and nature. For the elderly, spirituality can play a significant role in shaping their religious ritual activities. This study aims to explore the relationship between spiritual levels and religious ritual activities in the elderly at the UPT Social Services for Elderly and Toddler Children in the Binjai and Medan regions.

The Significance of Spirituality in the Elderly

Spirituality is often understood as a person's connection to something greater than themselves. For the elderly, this connection can be particularly important, as it can provide a sense of purpose and meaning in life. Research has shown that spirituality can have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of older adults, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression (Koenig, 2013). Furthermore, spirituality can also play a role in shaping the elderly's religious ritual activities, influencing their participation in religious practices and their sense of community.

Methodology

This study employed a correlation method with a cross-sectional design, involving 172 elderly individuals as the population. Of this amount, 43 elderly individuals were selected as samples through accidental sampling techniques. Data analysis was carried out using the Spearman RHO test to determine the relationship between the two variables: spiritual levels and religious ritual activities.

Results

The results of the study showed that 23 people (53%) of respondents had a high spiritual level, while 16 people (37%) showed high religious ritual activity. However, further analysis with a P-value of -0.008 showed the absence of a significant relationship between the spiritual level and religious ritual activity in the elderly. These results indicate that although many elderly people have a high spiritual level, this does not necessarily affect their level of involvement in religious ritual activities.

There are several factors that influence the relationship between spiritual levels and religious ritual activities in the elderly. Physical weakness, diseases suffered, and health complications are often experienced by the elderly, limiting their access to participate in religious ritual activities that usually require mobility and stamina. Mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, can also be a barrier for the elderly to be actively involved in religious activities, although spiritually they still feel closeness with God.

For further research, it is essential to consider the use of more comprehensive methods, such as observation and interviews, in order to gain deeper insights about the spiritual experience of the elderly and how this affects their participation in ritual activities. Conclusion

Although this research shows that there are challenges for the elderly in expressing their spirituality through religious ritual activities, this opens opportunities to understand and help them to remain spiritually and socially connected in the community. This is important so that they do not feel alienated and can still find meaning in their lives in old age.
