Introduction

Obesity is a serious nutritional problem that affects millions of people worldwide, including adolescents. In Medan, a city in Indonesia, a study of 1,178 students revealed that 69 of them were at risk of obesity. These students claimed to often consume junk food, especially after school and on vacation. This study aims to explore the effect of exposure to junk food advertisements, food consumption patterns, and the level of physical activity on the incidence of obesity among adolescents in Medan.

Researchers note that there is a significant relationship between the exposure of junk food advertisements, junk food consumption, and physical activity to the prevalence of obesity among adolescents. The results showed each P value for Junk Food advertisements (p = 0.047), consumption of junk food (p = 0.001), and physical activity (p = 0.017), all of which were below a significant limit of 0.05.

With so many advertisements targeting teenagers, they tend to be affected to buy and consume these low nutritional food products. Aggressive marketing, especially in hours where teens watch many television or surfing the internet, can make them more interested in trying these foods, even though they are aware that this food is not healthy.

On the other hand, junk food consumption patterns are increasingly common among teenagers, especially with easy access to fast food. The availability of fast food around the school and hangout places makes teenagers prefer to consume them rather than healthy food. This is further exacerbated by the lack of their understanding of balanced nutrition and negative impacts of bad eating habits.

Physical Activity and Adolescent Health

Physical activity also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight. However, many teenagers prefer to spend time in front of the screen, be it television, computer, or cellphone, rather than doing physical activity. This decrease in physical activity contributes to weight gain, especially when their diet is dominated by junk food.
