Analysis of Potential Adsorbents made from Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Guar Gum to the Absorption of Blue Methylene using Freundlich and Langmuir Adsorption Isotherm
Introduction
The increasing demand for environmentally friendly materials has led to the development of new adsorbents from natural sources. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Guar Gum (GG) are two biodegradable polymers that have been widely used in various applications. In this study, we aim to investigate the potential of CMC-GG adsorbents in absorbing blue methylene, a common dye pollutant. The adsorption capacity and equilibrium time of the adsorbent were evaluated using the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models.
Materials and Methods
The CMC-GG adsorbent was prepared by mixing CMC and GG in a specific ratio, followed by the addition of aluminum sulfuric octadecahidrate and boric acid as cross-linking agents. The resulting adsorbent was then analyzed using the Water Absorption Capacity (WAC) method, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The dye adsorption process was carried out with a time variation at 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes, and 75 minutes.
Results and Discussion
The results of the study showed that the equilibrium time of the absorption of blue methylene was found to be 45 minutes. The absorption of blue methylene was carried out with a variety of concentrations of 20 ppm, 40 ppm, 60 ppm, 80 ppm, and 100 ppm. The concentration of each variation in blue methylene was determined using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The experimental results showed that the CMC-GG-AB-AB adsorbent was effective in absorbing blue methylene coloring. The adsorption capacity of the concentration variation respectively was 3.7017 mg/g; 7.4113 mg/g; 10.9718 mg/g; 14.9653 mg/g; and 18.6531 mg/g.
The higher the concentration of blue methylene coloring, the higher the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent produced. This indicates that the CMC-GG adsorbent has a high potential in absorbing dye pollutants. The adsorption isotherm model that is most suitable for this study is the Langmuir isotherm, with a R² value of 0.9912 and the adsorption capacity obtained is 158.73 mg/g. This Langmuir model shows that the adsorption process occurs in the monomolecular layer and there is a saturation point on the surface of the adsorbent.
Conclusion
This study provides valuable insight into the potential use of CMC and GG as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for processing dyes. With its good ability to absorb coloring, this research not only contributes to the development of new adsorbent materials, but also helps in the environmental protection effort from the impact of dyes that can pollute water sources. The CMC-GG adsorbent has a high potential in absorbing dye pollutants and can be used as a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment.

Future studies can focus on optimizing the preparation method of the CMC-GG adsorbent to improve its adsorption capacity and stability. Additionally, the use of CMC-GG adsorbent in real-world applications, such as wastewater treatment plants, can be explored to evaluate its effectiveness in removing dye pollutants from water sources.
