This study was conducted by Frisco Panaya S. under the guidance of Yunus Afifudin and Lutfi Hakim, and it aimed to analyze the economic losses and map the distribution of termites in state elementary school buildings in the western part of Pekanbaru City. The study was conducted for two months, from July to August 2014, using the Purposive Sampling method by taking 15% of the total public elementary school in Pekanbaru City.

Data collection methods

Data collection was carried out by direct observation and interviews in the field using questionnaires. The data obtained was then mapped using a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Economic losses due to termite attacks

The results of this study showed that 60% of state elementary school buildings suffered minor damage, while 40% suffered moderate damage. Economic losses due to termite attacks on public elementary school buildings in the western part of Pekanbaru City are estimated to reach Rp334,130,000.00 if using Tembesu wood standards, and Rp246,367,000.00 if using Meranti wood standards.

Type of termites found

This study also succeeded in identifying the type of termite that attacks the state elementary school buildings in the region. The two types of termites found are:

*** Microtermes Inspiratory ** (soil termites): This type is often found in the soil and attacks wood from the bottom of the building. *** Cryptotermes Cynocephalus ** (dry wood termites): This type attacks the wood that has been dry and is usually found in wood.
