The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of North Sumatra is one of the leading institutions in Indonesia that produces graduates in agriculture. However, the interest of students in becoming agricultural extension workers is still a concern. Agricultural extension workers play a crucial role in disseminating agricultural knowledge and technology to farmers, which is essential for improving agricultural productivity and food security. Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach, with a sample of 163 students from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of North Sumatra. The data used consisted of primary and secondary data, with data analysis using descriptive analysis methods and binary logistics regression. The research population was active undergraduate program students at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra.

Results

The results showed that 55% of the Faculty of Agriculture students had an interest in becoming agricultural extension workers, which was included in the dominant interest category. Furthermore, there are several factors that simultaneously affect the interest of students to have a career in this field, namely the perception of the extension profession, self-efficacy, labor market considerations, family environment, and scientific fields. However, the analysis shows that partially, only perceptions about the extension profession, self-efficacy, labor market considerations, and family environment that have a significant effect on student interest, while the scientific field does not show significant effects.

Students who feel confident with their communication skills and agricultural knowledge are more likely to choose this path. This study shows that although there are quite good interests from the Faculty of Agriculture students to become agricultural instructors, there are still many factors that influence their decisions. Synergy between educational institutions, government, and community is needed to create an environment that supports the growth of student interest. Thus, it is hoped that in the future there will be more quality agricultural extension workers to support agricultural development in Indonesia.
